What This Design References
The Shroud of Turin is a linen cloth about 4.4 meters (14.5 feet) long bearing the faint front-and-back image of a man who appears to have been scourged and crucified. First documented in Lirey, France, in the 1350s, it has been kept in Turin’s Cathedral of St. John the Baptist since 1578. The scorch marks and patches come from a 1532 fire in Chambéry, and its negative-like image was first noticed in Secondo Pia’s 1898 photographs. Radiocarbon tests in 1988 dated the linen to 1260–1390, a result that is still debated. The Catholic Church permits veneration but has never officially declared it authentic.
