Bohemian Grove is a 2,700-acre redwood campground in Monte Rio, California, owned by the Bohemian Club, a private San Francisco men’s club founded in 1872. Each July, members and guests, including politicians, executives and artists, gather for a two-week encampment that opens with the “Cremation of Care,” a theatrical ceremony staged before a giant owl statue. The club’s secrecy has fueled decades of theories about occult rituals and backroom deals; those remain claims, not established fact. Brohemian Grove moves the retreat to Summerfield, Florida, and puts a lobster next to the owl.
